Getting Started

Wardens of Wen is a run-based action RPG about holding Wen through escalating waves, quests, gear decisions, NPC services, and long-term unlocks. This page focuses on what a new player needs before the deeper reference pages.

Only these Wardens are unlocked from the start. The rest are earned through Valor achievements.

Frontline / Taunt / Barrier

Jack

Armored vanguard that anchors lanes and keeps foes busy with shields and taunts.

Hybrid / Weapon Swap / Burst

Robin

Flexible combatant who swaps stances to exploit enemy weaknesses.

Elemental / Control / AoE

Jade

Elementalist weaving fire and lightning to control the battlefield.
  1. Choose Jack, Robin, or Jade based on how you want to learn: Jack forgives mistakes, Robin teaches weapon pressure, and Jade teaches spacing plus spell timing.
  2. Keep moving. Enemy waves are built to pressure the Warden from offscreen and nearby spawn lanes, so standing still too long makes the pack collapse on you.
  3. Spend early Copper on survival before luxury. Potions, repairs, useful gear, and service access matter more than chasing perfect item rolls.
  4. Accept quests when the objective fits your current run. Contract Board quests and NPC quests add rewards, but some objectives can fail if you ignore their timing, positioning, or kill requirements.
  5. Open the inventory after meaningful drops. Gear contributes stats, affixes, sockets, durability, and sometimes set or artifact behavior.
  6. Bank Gold through the Vault when you can safely reach it. Unbanked run gains are more fragile than stored progression.
  • Treat nightfall, weather, hot zones, Hellmouths, Healing Pylons, assassins, nemesis spawns, and boss warnings as route-changing events.
  • Do not let ranged enemies and healers sit behind the main pack. They turn ordinary waves into long, expensive fights.
  • Repair, socket, break down, and craft gear as soon as those systems become available; the item system is a major part of power growth.
  • Use food and potions proactively. Waiting until one more hit will kill you is usually too late.
  • If a locked Warden looks interesting, check Valor first so you know which achievement path to chase.
